Do you know whose land you live on?

I grew up on the land of the Illini, a confederation of the Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Peoria, Tamaroa, Moingwena, Michigamea, Chepoussa, Chinkoa, Coiracoentanon, Espeminkia, Maroa, and Tapouara tribes. People who were killed off or forcefully removed by the federal government so thoroughly that they were largely eliminated from the land by the mid-1800s.

I also grew up to images of Chief Illiniwek, the racist mascot of the University of Illinois @illinois1867, who was supposed to represent the Illini but wore the regalia of the Sioux. He was not officially removed until 2007 (with a LOT of anger from pro-Chief supporters), but in 2020 no replacement has been named, leaving this racist symbol as the unofficial mascot to this day, with "Unofficial Chief Portrayers" (see the Chief Illiniwek Wikipedia page for a list), unofficial merch, and plenty of continued support.

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, I'm taking the time to learn more about the people whose land I live on. And as I turn towards starting to do some more exploration of my home state, I'm making it a priority to learn and share the history of the places that I am visiting.

One of the most magical moments I've ever experienced was walking along the medieval walls of Obidos, Portugal after all of the day-trippers had gone. I had the place completely to myself as it turned beautiful colors of yellow, blue, and dusky pink, and it was everything.
